First boutique retail store
In 1991 Frauke opened her own store in Kununurra, Kimberley Fine Diamonds, where she did everything from designing jewellery to cleaning the store in between educating herself about diamonds and the industry. It wasn't long before Frauke realised the importance of quality control regarding her designs and went on to employ a Master Jeweller on site and two local staff. Within the first 12 months, Kimberley Fine Diamonds was recognised within the community as an exciting venture. It became the epicentre for cultural activities with exhibitions by local artists held on site. Kimberley Fine Diamonds also became one of the leading supporters of community activities - never did an event pass of which it was not a major sponsor.
Frauke became a panel member and appointed distributor of the exclusive Argyle Diamonds and built an international network within the industry. Within five years Kimberley Fine Diamonds moved to new premises in the town that was double the size. She had successfully used the lack of sophistication and fashion in the region to her advantage, with Kimberley Fine Diamonds often being referred to as an oasis amongst the 'blokey' outback - exactly what her vision had been. The extremely remote location could also have been a downfall, but again Frauke used the natural magic of the Kimberley to her advantage and became an unrivalled pioneer in boutique retail and tourism in the area. Her efforts have resulted in many awards and recognition for her bold and daring designs and as leading player in the international marketplace. The accolades include being named a finalist in the Telstra Business Women's Awards and Winner of the Self Achievement in Business Award.
Since starting the business, Frauke has been a highly respected mentor for women in business and often relates her experiences on the public speaking circuit. Throughout the entire time she was developing Kimberley Fine Diamonds, Frauke continued to operate the farm she and her husband had started - now a prospering 1100 hectare irrigated horticulture property - and a caravan park on Lake Kununurra. She had also managed to dedicate time to many local charities. "I strongly believe there are countless women out there capable of achieving amazing things. They need to overcome the challenges life has imposed on them and turn them around. "One of my mottos is 'learning by doing' which was particularly apt considering I had no experience whatsoever. I can tell you, I fell on my face many times, but I was always determined to pick myself up again and keep going.
"Women in Kununurra have seen first hand that it is possible to overcome these hurdles and have been encouraged by me to open shops, go into the workforce and start a new life."
